CHAPTER TEN

“Who was the boy?” Trey asked, pressing his hand against the wound in his shoulder. “You didn’t say anything about a human being involved in this.”

“I wasn’t aware of his existence.” Crimsonstar frowned at the sky. Quicksilver, involved with a human? It didn’t seem possible. She’d never expressed interest in humans before. “They seemed awfully protective of each other, didn’t they?”

“Maybe they’re lovers.”

Crimsonstar snorted. “Nonsense. Quicksilver has better taste.” Not that he cared, of course. Why should he?

“I’m not killing a human.”

“It’s not as if you’ve never done it before.” Perhaps not the best argument, judging by the dark expression on Trey’s face.

“Now, now.” Crimsonstar held up his hands. “Let’s not get testy. No one said anything about you having to kill a human. Now I know to expect him, I can be prepared to deal with him on my own. I can certainly handle one little human.”

Trey pointed a bloody finger at him. “You aren’t killing him either. No humans are going to die over this. You got it?”

“All right. Fine. We won’t kill the human.” Crimsonstar hid his ire behind an ingratiating smile. “But we’ll certainly have to do something with him if he’s going to be shooting at us. Quicksilver is the only one who has to die.”

“Are you sure I can kill her?” Trey asked. “She didn’t seem bothered by my fire at all.”

“She was bothered,” Crimsonstar said. “She was simply trying not to show it. Silver always has been a strong woman. Not the type to show weakness in the face of an enemy. But believe me, she was feeling the heat. If the human hadn’t interrupted then all of this would have ended here.”

Trey inspected his wound. “Seeing as how I’m shot over here, I think I’ll go home. Sarah will have felt my pain and she’ll be getting frantic. I don’t want her to come looking for me. You call me when you get ready to go after Quicksilver again. Maybe I’ll answer.” He strode off down the street.

Crimsonstar scowled as the sound of sirens filled the night. No doubt a neighbor had heard the shot and called the police. The last thing he needed was to have to deal with them. It was bad enough having to deal with Trey. It was amazing how one human girl had managed to twist him up so. He could have killed the boy and finished Quicksilver off tonight. Instead he’d hesitated and they both escaped.

Slipping into the shadows, Crimsonstar moved away from the house and the approach of flashing lights. One good thing about tonight was the revelation of Quicksilver’s weakness. She’d always been loyal to a fault. A loyalty she had once given only to him. But if she cared about the human at all then she would not abandon him. She would try to keep him close. Protect him. And it just might be her undoing.

“You’re only delaying the inevitable,” Crimsonstar whispered into the night. “The next time we meet, both of us won’t be leaving alive.
